The History of QCNA

The Queensland Catholic Netball Association (QCNA) was formed in 1976 with 19 teams taking part in fixtures.

Prior to 1976 the netball teams were organised as part of the YCW (Young Christian Workers Movement). Teams played at Parish Schools and Church grounds and then moved to Spring Hill to play at the Playground Recreation Association grounds. Because YCQ was folding but the Netball was strong, a couple of people decided to keep it going.

The decision to choose the name Queensland Catholic Netball Association was because we were also taking part in an Interstate Competition with other YCW and Catholic Associations. This was a social competition that ran all year round with a major focus on the elite level through the ACNA Championships.

QCNA sent teams each year since 1973 to the Australasian Catholic Netball Association Inc Championships. Prior to 1973, YCW entered a senior team in the QCNA Championships but not on a regular basis.

QCNA have hosted the ACNA Championships 9 times. ACNA had been operating for over 50 years, starting with only two participating states. At the end of ACNA, they have five regular states plus New Zealand participating.

During the 90s, QLD because very strong contenders, winning the Senior Division twice and the Open Schoolgirls once, being placed 2nd on a number of occasions. This was a very strong competition with a number of Australian players starting their careers through ACNA; Renee Hallinan, Catherine Cox and Ker Green.

With many changes to Netball across Australia and New Zealand, ACNA was disbanded and QCNA’s involvement was no more.

EXPLAIN HOW QC MOVED TO BEING AN ASSOCIATION AND WHAT CAME NEXT.

QC’s mission has always been to provide Netball and skill development for all players, to become they best they can be.
